The MIAA doesn’t hand out a courage award at its All-State Cross Country Championships, but perhaps it should consider doing so after Hingham senior Shauna McNiff’s performance in Saturday’s Div. 2 girls race. Running in fourth place and ahead of her personal-record pace with approximately 200 meters to go until the finish line, McNiff succumbed to exhaustion and the wet conditions on Franklin Park’s 3.1-mile course and fell. She quickly rose to her feet, but Harbormen coach Livvy Kates knew something about McNiff wasn’t right. “She looked like she had no idea where she was,” Kates said. With a race official jogging alongside of her, McNiff wobbled across the finish line in 19 minutes, 26 seconds, which was good for eighth place.
