Mansfield - Mansfield High junior Patrick McGowan hadn’t run competitively in nearly a month prior to Saturday’s MIAA All-State Cross Country Championships at Franklin Park. An injury to his fibula had forced him to spend more time in the pool doing something called “Aqua Jogging” and on the elliptical machine, rather than on the pavement logging miles.
At last week’s Eastern Mass. championships, he watched from the sideline as his team captured the Div. 1 crown.
 So when he toed the line prior to Saturday’s Div. 1 boys race, neither he nor his coach, Julie Collins, had any idea what to expect from him.
