Newton South's Lucy Jenks Wins D1 State Title By Mary Albl of DyeStat In just her first season of cross country, Newton South’s Lucy Jenks has proven quickly she’s a fast study. Saturday at Gardner Municipal Golf Course in Gardner, Jenks won the Massachusetts State Division 1 title in 18:53. Jenks, a standout on the track, played soccer for the first years years of high school. The Stanford-bound runner won the race by more than 20 seconds. The girls team title was easily won by Concord-Carlisle. The team placed three in the top 17 to score 74 points. The boys Division 1 title was claimed by St. John’s Prep with 112 points, edging out Wellesley 126 points. Three runners finished in the top 25 for St. John’s Prep. Individually, King Philip senior Mike Griffin, who recently committed to the University of Tennessee, won in 16:06. In Division 2, Weston sophomore Carmel Fitzgibbon put down the fastest time of the day to win in 18:30. The team title went to Lenox with 98 points. Three runners all finished in the top 20 for the team. A year after finishing in second place, Arlington Catholic’s Sean Kay not only won the Division 2 title, but put down the best time of the day, winning in 16:03, 15 seconds faster than the next runner in the race. The Martha’s Vineyard boys team claimed the first Division 2 team championship in program history with 148 points.
